Inquiry into Asif's case over, decision today on sending to court

Sunday, June 8, 2008

An official inquiry into the drugs case against Pakistan pace-man Mohammad Asif in Dubai is over, with the findings handed over to the attorney general.

Asif, 25, was seized at Dubai airport last Sunday while returning home from India after featuring in a domestic cricket event.

He appeared before a Dubai prosecutor Thursday on charges of possessing an illegal substance (opium of 0.2 grams). Asif has said he is innocent.

Chief prosecutor Muhammad Ali Rustam has sent the case to the attorney general after completing the investigation of the case.

Now the attorney general has to decide to produce Asif before the court or deport him or release him.

This is expected that the case may be decided in a day or two.

The sources said that Asif would be freed.
